NICE guidelines for Lower back pain

Back pain remains the most common cause of work-based absence and the leading cause of chronic disability in young adults. This condition affects  60-70% of adults, peaking at age 35-55 with the number of children affected rising dramatically. Lower back pain is estimated to cost the UK economy £5.1bn every year, including £1bn of NHS money with 2.6 million people visiting their GP and more than 100 million workdays lost.

We therefore welcome the recent revised National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines from 2016, recommending manual therapy as the go to treatment therapy for acute, sub-acute and chronic low back pain with or without sciatica (leg pain). Combined with rehabilitative exercises studies show that patients have much better treatment outcomes.

All our chiropractors are trained to the highest level at spinal manipulative therapy. They have extensive training in spinal rehabilitation and are qualified to  devise tailored exercise and rehabilitation programmes. NICE has proposed such exercise programmes to be implemented as part of its Lower Back Pain guidelines.
